Mariazell School, KZN, SA

The FREEDOM TRAIL retraces old historic wagon routes which stretch across South Africa, between Peitermaritzberg in KZN and Wellington in the Cape. This trail is unmarked and totals 2300 km. Mountain bikers in search for the ultimate journey across South Africa challenge themselves to compete this iconic voyage either during the annual FREEDOM CHALLENGE mountain bike race in June or as portion of the route during one of the shorter more manageable events or even as a private self-paced tour.

The Freedom Trail Foundation provides scholarship opportunities to children along the trail and was started as a rider initiative.

Over 40 children have received scholarships since the Freedom Challenge Scholarship Fund started in 2010.

Children from the Mehlodeng area on the Freedom Trail can apply for a scholarship.

Successful candidates are awarded scholarships to attend Mariazell, a private missionary school near Malekholonyane support station. (This is the 4th overnight stop on the RACE ACROSS SOUTH AFICA of the Freedom Challenge.

Scholarships include:

Tsepo Lesholu, an employee of the Freedom Challenge, serves as mentor to the scholars and is highly involved with the children during their years spent at Mariazell.
